New Elder

The New Elder is one who has developed the qualities and taken on the wisdom-source role of the old elder (or sage) who used to be so respected in human societies.

New Elders are needed to lead us to creation of a global community which respects all humanity and respects the Earth we live on.

Third Age

After Childhood (Growth, Learning) and Adulthood (Family, Career, Security, Success):

Our increased longevity has created a Third Age: Elderhood. Possibilities. Reinvent yourself and your life. Growth. Retire or a whole new career? What do you want to experience, learn? What difference do you want to make on this Earth? Organizing principles: Fulfillment, Purpose, Legacy.

Sage-ing®

Sage-ing® is the term coined by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi in his book From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older. It refers to the process by which we develop and nurture our wisdom in our Third Age.

Hi, I’m Paul Severance, Founder of the Center for the New Elder.

The Center for the New Elder can help. I have over 30 years experience helping elders learn how to make a difference on issues they care about – and I’ve seen the impact they have had. Every one of us can make a significant difference by fulfilling our unique purpose. The programs of the Center for the New Elder are designed to support you to define your purpose in your third age and to truly make a difference.

Most of us are affected by the ageist messages that abound in our society. Messages that say once your primary career is over or you reach some pre-determined age, your productive years are past, your voice is not needed, and the best you can hope for is some well-deserved recreation and gradual decline.

Well, I don’t buy that, and I hope you don’t either!

Here’s an alternative message that speaks to me:

“Now, more than ever, we need new elders among us. New elders are natural resources that are needed today by the family, the community, the organization, and the Earth. We can’t wait for the wise ones to come. We need to become the new elders.”

So how do we become the New Elders our world so desperately needs?

  • We consciously grow our inner wisdom through deep reflection on our lives; through work on healing wounds and relationships; through examining and clarifying our values and beliefs; through deepening our connection to spirit; through coming to terms with our own mortality. This is the work Zalman Schachter-Shalomi calls Sage-ing®.
  • We focus on our legacy by sharing our wisdom and our life stories; by tapping the energy of our passions to define our purpose as New Elders, and by defining and pursuing our New Elder Mission.
  • We engage with others on the New Elder path for inspiration, support and accountability. It doesn’t work for most of us to take on becoming a New Elder in isolation.

The Center for the New Elder can offer you inspiration and tools for realizing the potential of living your third age as a New Elder.

We offer:

  • Free teleseminars and free presentations for groups and organizations in Central Indiana: Passion, Power and Purpose in the Third Age.
  • Path of the New Elder seminars (in person or by teleseminar).
  • New Elder Mission Mastermind Groups (in person or by teleseminar).
  • Individual New Elder Mission Coaching (in person or on the phone).
  • Our New Elder Forum. On our Forum page of this website you can join a community of New Elders discussing key issues, sharing stories, asking questions, proposing answers, and supporting each other.
